The Future of Pulse Breeding in Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan Pulse Growers (SPG) is a not-for-profit organization representing and supporting approximately 15,000 pulse crop growers in Saskatchewan. SPG is funded by a mandatory, non-refundable levy and led by a producer-elected Board of Directors, comprised of nine Saskatchewan pulse growers. The pulse crops grown in Saskatchewan are peas, lentils, chickpeas, soybeans, faba beans, dry beans, and fenugreek. Canada is the world’s leading lentil, pea, and chickpea exporter. Saskatchewan growers produce 90% of the Canadian lentil crop, 50% of Canadian peas, and 95% of Canadian chickpeas. SPG has four major program areas that are funded through grower levy dollars: research and development, market development, communications, and variety commercialization. Approximately 60% of SPG’s budget is invested into research, with a significant amount in support of pulse crop variety development.
