Winter canola: The next hot crop in Ontario?

August 10, 2020  By Top Crop Manager

Winter canola may be the crop of choice for the post-harvest seeding season in Ontario.

According to Meghan Moran, canola and edible bean specialist with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA), winter canola seed sales have been very strong. She’s expecting winter canola acreage in Ontario in 2020 to be higher than ever before.

Moran notes that research on winter canola is limited, but she has compiled a list of recommendations and tips for intrepid growers. These include how to select fields for success, the importance of knowing a field’s herbicide history, planting dates, and best practices for seeding rate and method.

Any growers who plan to seed winter canola are asked to contact Moran, as she is interested in checking fields before winter and in early spring to learn more about winter canola BMPs and winter survival. Moran can be reached at 519-546-1725 and meghan.moran@ontario.ca.
