Government looks to fill Farm Debt Mediation Service Appeals Board vacancies

February 8, 2021  By Top Crop Manager

The Government of Canada is seeking applications to join the Farm Debt Mediation Service Appeals Board. A total of 10 positions – two chairpersons, eight board members – are available. Ideal candidates will have experience as owners and/or operators of a farming enterprise or experience providing financial advisory services to farming operations.

The Farm Debt Mediation Service (FDMS) offers financial counselling and mediation services to farmers who are having difficulties meeting their financial obligations. It is a free and voluntary service for both producers and creditor(s). The service helps bring producers and their creditor(s) together with a mediator in a neutral forum to reach a mutually acceptable solution.

According to the posting, the FDMS Appeal Board is responsible for determining whether an applicant’s appeal has merit. Typically, appeals are submitted to an FDMS administrator in writing. The chairperson calls a panel to hear the appeal from among the appointed Appeal Board members. The decision of the Appeal Panel is final and is not subject to any further appeal.
