AWC calls for nominations for board of directors, regional reps

September 16, 2020  By Alberta Wheat Commission

The Alberta Wheat Commission (AWC) is seeking nominations from wheat farmers in Regions 2 and 4 to join AWC’s board of directors and regional representatives. Positions open for nominations include two directors and three regional representatives in Region 2, plus two directors and three regional representatives in Region 4.

Region 2 consists of south-central Alberta, including Calgary and surrounding counties and east to the Special Areas. Region 4 consists of northeastern Alberta, including Edmonton and surrounding counties, Lloydminster and north of Fort McMurray. AWC’s region map can be found here.

Wheat producers in Regions 2 and 4 are encouraged to nominate local leaders that will be strong representatives of farmers in their region and positive contributors to the development of research, market development, policy and extension. The elected board of directors and regional representatives will serve Alberta wheat producers by providing strategic direction to the initiatives and investments of AWC, a producer-funded organization that aims to increase the profitability of Alberta wheat.

“It is an exciting time to be a part of leading the wheat industry in our province.” said Todd Hames, AWC chair. “I encourage farmers both young and experienced to become involved in the commission and bring their knowledge and ideas to the table. Through AWC, farmers have the opportunity to contribute to research, development of new wheat markets and trade access, agriculture policy and grower extension, among other key areas.”

Nomination forms can be downloaded on our elections page and must be returned to the AWC office by Friday, Oct. 30 by fax (403-717-1966), email (bkennedy@albertawheatbarley.com) or mail (200-6815, 8 St. NE, Calgary, AB, T2E7H7). Producers in Regions 2 and 4 will also receive a package in the mail with more information and a nomination form.

Elections, if required, will take place at the regional meeting in Strathmore on November 18 for Region 2, and Region 4 elections will take place, if required, at the regional meeting in Bonnyville on November 23. Regional meeting information can be found by visiting the events page on AWC’s website.

Farmers running for a position must have remitted payment to AWC on commercial wheat sales in either the current or previous two fiscal years, and they must grow wheat in the region in which they wish to be nominated.
