FCC: The future of Canada’s ag labour shortage

Farm Credit Canada asks: is the labour shortage here to stay?

It has been front-page news for some time now. Access to labour is a major concern in agriculture and agri-food processing. The labour demand is not matched by supply mainly due to retiring baby boomers and low population growth.

According to the latest data, vacancy rates in Quebec and British Columbia stand at approximately six per cent, whereas they are below 4.5 per cent in the Prairie provinces. FCC analysts can’t say whether these regional differences will increase or decrease, but from their analysis, they expect to see vacancy rates increase across the country.
