Sask Wheat releases wheat stem sawfly resource

November 9, 2023  By Derek Clouthier

Sask Wheat’s has released its Wheat Stem Sawfly risk maps, which help wheat producers identify the level of risk for wheat stem sawfly. The maps, in conjunction with scouting, help producers determine if management is needed.

Wheat stem sawfly is a long standing and perennial pest of wheat in Saskatchewan. At times the damage has been very severe resulting in serious yield losses. For more information on how to identify and manage this pest, visit the Ministry of Saskatchewan’s Wheat Stem Sawfly Resource page.

The formal survey of wheat stem sawfly began in 2023. Moderate to high levels of cutting were detected throughout the brown and dark brown soil zones with particularly high numbers near Moose Jaw, and central and east-central regions.
