OMAFRA update on forage crops

July 6, 2020  By Top Crop Manager

Christine O’Reilly, forage and grazing specialist with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA), recently released the forage report for June.

Precipitation in most parts of the province was average or below average, with northern parts of the province receiving more precipitation than normal. First cut started in the first week of June in southwestern and northwestern Ontario, and the second week of June in the central, eastern and northeastern parts of the province.

True armyworm has been troubling crops in southwestern Ontario, and growers are cautioned to scout alfalfa crops for potato leafhopper in central, eastern and southwestern Ontario, especially in the regions surrounding the Great Lakes. Alfalfa weevil has been reported in northwestern Ontario.
