Alberta Wheat Commission announces new directors; positions still open

November 6, 2019  By Alberta Wheat Commission

Following the November 1 deadline for nominations, the Alberta Wheat Commission (AWC) announced the results for director nominations.

Results for director positions are as follows:

  • Region 1: Jason Saunders from Taber was acclaimed.
  • Region 5: Greg Sears from Sexsmith and David Bartlett from Fairview were acclaimed.

Greg Sears and David Bartlett are both new AWC directors while Jason Saunders is entering his second, three-year term on AWC’s board. Sears and Bartlett are replacing Cole Siegle and Warren Sekulic, both from region 5. Sekulic has completed his second term as a director and Siegle did not seek re-election. AWC thanks both Sekulic and Siegle for their service on the board. AWC welcomes Sears and Bartlett who will begin their terms following AWC’s annual general meeting at the end of January.

Following the nomination period there is still one director position open in region 1. AWC’s board of directors will be appointing a farmer from that region to fill the position currently held by board chair Gary Stanford. Stanford will continue as chair until the annual general meeting.

The nomination period also resulted in two new regional representatives (reps) including:

  • Region 1: Gary Stanford from Magrath was acclaimed.
  • Region 5: Christi Friesen from Brownvale was acclaimed.

Stanford’s new role as regional rep follows his final term as an AWC director. Stanford has been on AWC’s board since its inception and has played a major role in shaping the direction of the commission. The commission appreciates Stanford’s dedication and is pleased to welcome him in this new capacity. AWC also welcomes Friesen to her first term as a regional rep.

A number of regional representative positions still remain open in regions 1 and 5. Farmers are encouraged to attend Next Level Farming meetings where they will be able to nominate and vote their peers into these positions. Information about Next Level Farming meetings can be found on AWC’s events page.

For more information about becoming a director or regional rep, farmers are encouraged to speak to their region leadership or read more online.
