PPMN provides weekly pest posts for the Prairies
May 20, 2020 By Top Crop Manager
The Prairie Pest Monitoring Network (PPMN) is back with their “insect of the week” posts, though they’re doing things a little differently this year. Rather than focusing on a single insect each week, they’re choosing a crop and looking at a list of its insect pests. Each post will also feature an entomologist who supports the PPMN to provide a personal perspective.
This week, the PPMN has focused on chickpea and lentil pests, including cutworms, grasshoppers and pea leaf weevil. For tips on how to manage chickpea and lentil pests, the PPMN has linked their two relevant field guides.
Erl Svendsen, a senior environment resource specialist with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Saskatoon, is the entomologist of the week. However, he is not an entomologist. Svendsen says that his work supports PPMN entomologist communications, including the Cereal Aphid Manager app and recent insect field guides.
