Less than half of corn and soybeans planted, delayed by saturated fields
June 19, 2015, Windsor, ON - About 40 per cent of Essex County's usual corn and soybean crop is not planted or it's in fields so swamped farmers will have to replant, according to Essex County Federation of Agriculture past president Mark Balkwill.
In a story published in the Windsor Star, Balkwill said it could cost some farmers hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost production. It's a ballpark estimate of the costly waiting game local farmers face as rain continues to delay planting with a looming June 30 crop insurance deadline.
