Insect pest pressure rising in Ontario

Ontario growers: be on the lookout for alfalfa weevil and potato leafhopper (PLH) in your fields. Tracey Baute, field crop entomologist with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) and creator of the Baute Bug Blog, has issued a warning after finding high numbers of the insect pests in Ontario fields, citing the hot, dry weather as an exacerbating factor.

Baute recommends growers scout their fields to determine if pest thresholds have been reached, and whether cutting or insecticide applications are necessary. If both pests are present in fields, she says to consider them at threshold even if they haven’t quite hit the individual pest thresholds. |READ MORE
