Farm & Food Care receives funds and new directors

Mar. 14, 2013, Guelph, ON - The Farm & Food Care Foundation has received a donation $7,100 from the Junior Farmers’ Association of Ontario (JFAO). The donation was the result of 2012 fundraising efforts by JFAO members across the province through efforts that included managing food booths, agricultural awareness initiatives and food grain plots.

Each year, the JFAO membership selects a charity of choice to raise funds for. The Foundation was chosen as the 2012 charity for its work in helping to ensure public trust and confidence in food and farming.

The presentation was made at the 2013 JFAO March Conference in London over the weekend. Krista McAvoy, JFAO executive director of finance, presented the cheque to Sue McLarty of the Foundation saying that “JFAO was pleased to support the foundation in its work on farmer advocacy to non farmers.”

McAvoy added that she believes programs run by the Farm & Food Care Foundation and its affiliate Farm & Food Care Ontario help to communicate the importance of agriculture in this province.

Bruce Christie, chair of the Farm & Food Care Foundation, said, “We recognize the significant work that JFAO members put into their fundraising. We know they had many choices in organizations to support and we’re especially grateful that they chose the Farm & Food Care Foundation. Their funds will go into our agricultural awareness efforts.”

The donation by the JFAO is in addition to $5,000 recently donated by the Oxford County Junior Farmer organization to Farm & Food Care.

The Foundation’s Board of Directors also met March 8 for its annual meeting, approving the organization’s bylaws and choosing an executive committee.

Farm & Food Care Foundation directors represent a broad cross section of the agri-food industry including farmers, animal health, feed, banking, crop protection, innovation and processing sectors.

New directors include Adele Buettner of Saskatchewan, Kim McConnell of Alberta and Carolynne Griffith of Ontario.

They join current directors Bruce Christie (chairman), Paul Wettlaufer, Leanne Cooley, John Geurtjens (secretary/treasurer), Ian McKillop (vice chairman), Jean Szkotnicki, John Maaskant, Rick Martin, Gwen Paddock and Gord Surgeoner.  Assisting the board in an advisory capacity will be Charlie Gracey and Rob McLaughlin.

In 2012, the Farm & Food Care Foundation received national status which will enable it to develop and support national programs and initiatives.
