Marie-Claude Bibeau has been reappointed as the federal minister of agriculture and agri-food. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s cabinet appointments were announced on Oct. 26, resulting from the federal election on Sept. 20.
Commodity groups and farm associations across the country have responded with congratulations on Bibeau’s reappointment and their hopes for the future of Canadian agriculture in working together.
“We look forward to continuing our productive relationship with Minister Bibeau,” said Mary Robinson, president of the Canadian Federation of Agriculture (CFA), in a press release. “We have worked closely with the minister throughout her tenure and the COVID-19 pandemic, and are now looking forward to collaborating to ensure that Canadian agriculture can serve as a powerful economic engine for Canada’s recovery and an impactful ally in the fight against climate change.”
“The 2021 crop year has been an unfortunate demonstration of how crucial it is to have Business Risk Management programs that accomplish their mandate,” said Tara Sawyer, Alberta Barley chair, in a press release. “In the absence of disaster relief options that truly work for farmers, we are bracing for the consequences of this year’s drought to roll into the 2022 crop year. We look forward to working with Minister Bibeau to develop solutions that work for farmers.”
Bibeau was the first woman minister of agriculture upon her appointment to the position in 2019. In her tenure, Bibeau has championed women and youth in agriculture through the development of programs and funding, as well as the Canadian Agricultural Youth Council.
It is with gratitude to @JustinTrudeau, and great ambition for the sector, that I continue in my role as Min of Ag, supported by my strong team! Challenges are great and opportunities are immense. We want our ag to be environmentally, economically and humanely sustainable pic.twitter.com/ikeoupRd0F
