OMAFRA phosphorus loss calculator now available

May 28, 2020  By Top Crop Manager

PLATO, the latest in the AgriSuite set of agricultural planning tools, is now available. The phosphorus loss assessment tool for Ontario (PLATO) was unveiled yesterday by Christine Brown, field crop sustainability specialist with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA).

PLATO helps determine the risk of phosphorus (P) loss at a field scale, taking into account both field characteristics (erosion risk, soil test level, etc.) and P application practices. Phosphorus loss through soil runoff is a contributor to surface water contamination. PLATO is intended to lower that risk by assisting farmers in determining the best timing, placement and amount for P application.
