Alberta funds wetland restoration to reduce drought and flood impact

December 3, 2024  By Alberta Government press release

Through the Westland Replacement Program, Alberta’s government is awarding $5 million to help support the province’s wetland construction and restoration. This support will go toward three municipalities and two non-profits constructing or restoring seven projects affecting more than 165 hectares of wetlands.

“Wetlands not only help protect Alberta from the devastating impacts of droughts and floods, but also support healthy, thriving ecosystems all across this province. We have invested more into wetlands than any other government in recent memory,” says Rebecca Schulz, minister of Environment and Protected Areas.

Wetlands store and slowly release water to help reduce the damaging effects of flooding and drought. They also filter runoff. The Wetland Replacement Program facilitates the replacement of wetlands across Alberta, prioritizing watersheds which have had the greatest loss of wetlands since 2015 and areas with the highest rates of loss historically. | READ MORE
