Winter barley provides opportunities and benefits

Winter barley isn’t a new crop in Ontario, but it is gaining in popularity. Thanks to maturing earlier than winter wheat, it offers the ability to double-crop soybeans in areas with a longer season.

Additional benefits include ground cover over the winter, dividing workload timing, additional opportunities for manure management, and an added feed source for livestock.

However, there are challenges to winter barley. Poor winter survival and early planting dates are issues to confront. Marketing winter barley can prove difficult, so having a plan for your harvested crop is paramount. |READ MORE
