What is new in soybean varieties?

Here are the newest soybean varieties that are being introduced in commercial quantities for 2011. With soybean acres projected at 700,000 in Manitoba for 2011, growers will want to order their seed supplies early. Talk to local seed suppliers to confirm seed availability, and to find out how the new varieties performed locally.

Dekalb 25-10RY is a Genuity Roundup Ready 2 Yield soybean rated at 2450 CHUs. It has excellent emergence, early season vigour, excellent standability and very good white mould tolerance.

Dekalb 24-60RY is another Genuity Roundup Ready 2 Yield soybean with a CHU rating of 2425. It has excellent emergence and seedling vigour, excellent standability and very good white mould tolerance. Contact local Dekalb dealers for more information on Dekalb soybeans.

HS 005R04 is an early maturing, Roundup Ready soybean with excellent yield potential. This variety has a brown hilum and medium plant height. HS 005R04 has very good lodging scores. Available from Hyland Seeds.

NSC Osborne RR2Y (proposed name pending registration). This Roundup Ready 2 Yield soybean variety has tall growth, exceptional pod height and very high yields. Maturity is approximately 2550 heat units and yields are 13 percent greater than the check in the McVet trials. It can be planted solid or in rows with a planter. Available from NorthStar Genetics.

NSC Gretona RR2Y (proposed name pending registration). This is another Roundup Ready 2 Yield soybean variety that has a tall growth habit, excellent pod height and aggressive lateral branching. Iron deficiency chlorosis (IDC) scores are good and it tolerates excessive soil moisture very well. It has a heat unit requirement of approximately 2600. Available from NorthStar Genetics.

900Y61 is a very early maturity variety rated at 2425 heat units. It contains the Roundup Ready trait. It exhibits very good field emergence, excellent harvest standability and contains multi-race Phytophthora resistance (Rps1c). From Pioneer Hi-Bred.

900Y71 is an early variety rated at 2450 heat units. It contains the Roundup Ready trait. Good agronomics and built-in multi-race Phytophthora resistance (Rps1c). From Pioneer Hi-Bred.

900Y81 is an early variety rated at 2475 heat units. It contains the Roundup Ready trait. Moderate stature and canopy width. Very good standability. Built-in, multi-race Phytophthora resistance (Rps1c). From Pioneer Hi-Bred.

Thunder 29002RR is an extremely early maturing variety rated at 2375 CHUs. It has an IDC score of 2.1 and is a slender type plant, which promotes very high pod height. It has good yield potential and is available in small quantities for 2011. It is a Roundup Ready (RR1) variety. From Quarry Seed.

Thunder 29004RR is a 2450 CHU variety that is very tall and has a very small seed count of 4100 seeds per pound. With an incredibly small seed size, it is a lot more cost effective for growers. It has an IDC score of 2 and is a light sensitive variety with good yield potential. Pod height is better than average. From Quarry Seed.

Thunder 30005RR is a mid- to late-maturing variety rated at 2500 CHUs. Its IDC score is 2 and this variety works best on 15- to 30-inch rows. It has extremely high yield potential and is a very tall plant with high pod set. Recommended for Winnipeg South. From Quarry Seed.

S00-W3 is an early maturing Roundup Ready variety rated at 2350 CHUs. S00-W3 has very good emergence, above average standability and stress tolerance plus resistance to phytophthora root rot (PRR) to help deliver top performance. From Syngenta Seeds.

S00-H7 is a high-yielding, medium-bush plant type that is medium height. It is a Roundup Ready variety rated at 2450 CHUs. Adapted to all row widths with excellent standability. Above average iron deficiency chlorosis (IDC) tolerance. Rps1c and good PRR field tolerance. From Syngenta Seeds.

PS 0027 RR is a new medium-tall Roundup Ready soybean variety with excellent agronomics and yield potential. This variety has performed very well during multiple years in the provincial trials with excellent maturity suitability for Western Canada soybean-growing areas. From Pride Seeds.
