SOYBEANS
Soybean breeding companies continue to focus on Roundup Ready varieties with short season maturity and high yield potential.
Isis RR Soybean is a short season variety with excellent standability. This hybrid has a CHU of 2400. Isis RR from Brett Young Seeds matures early, has an excellent yield and has good sclerotinia resistance.
24-52 R is a new product from the Dekalb lineup. 24-52 R has an excellent agronomic package that includes very good emergence and vigour as well excellent standability. Early maturity combined with excellent yield potential and very good iron chlorosis tolerance makes Dekalb 24-52 R an excellent fit in Western Canada.
HS 006R37 is a Roundup Ready, 2550 CHU from Hyland Seeds. It has very good yield potential and plant health, with good lodging and PRR (phytophthora root rot) scores and an excellent IDC (iron deficiency chlorosis) score.
S00-K5 is a mid-season, 2500 CHU Roundup Ready variety from Univar Canada. It was lower in yield than the check variety in Manitoba trials, but has a semi-tolerant IDC rating.
PRO 2625R is a long season, 2600 CHU variety from PRO Seeds of Canada. In Manitoba trials, it was lower yielding than check varieties. It is large seeded, and has a semi-tolerant IDC rating.
DRY BEANS
Dry bean variety trials in Manitoba include both narrow row (Western Manitoba Adaptation Trials) and the traditional wide-row trials. In other areas of the Prairies, information is for wide-row trials, unless otherwise noted.
Navy
Lightning is a new navy bean first tested in 2008 in Manitoba wide-row trials. With four site years of tests, Lightning yielded 118 percent of the check variety but was 11 days later maturing than the check variety Envoy.
Pinto
Windbreaker is a pinto bean with large seed, yields exceptionally well, and offers excellent seed quality. It is best suited to the Manitoba Red River Valley and is distributed by Canterra Seeds.
Agrinto is an indeterminate bush-type pinto bean with slightly higher yield than the check variety in narrow-row Western Manitoba Adaptation Trials, but was 13 days later maturing than the check, CDC Pintium. In wide-row trials in Manitoba, Agrinto was lower yielding than the check, but earlier maturing. It is available from Viterra.
Winmor had exceptionally high yield in narrow-row Western Manitoba Adaptation Trials, but was late maturing. In wide-row trials, it had lower yield than the check variety Maverick, but matured six days earlier. It is an indeterminate bush-type with large seed. Available in limited quantities from Viterra.
Great Northern
AC Polaris is the highest yielding great northern variety for the irrigated wide-row production in Southern Alberta. On average (31 station-years), the yield of AC Polaris was 3284 kg/ha and the maturity was 102 days from seeding. Developed by AAFC Lethbridge Research Centre and distributed by Viterra Alberta Bean Division.
Small Red
AC Redbond is the highest yielding small red bean variety for the irrigated wide production in Southern Alberta. On average (31 station-years), the yield of AC Redbond was 3011 kg/ha and the maturity was 100 days from seeding. AC Redbond has an upright growth habit. Developed by AAFC Lethbridge Research Centre and distributed by Viterra Alberta Bean Division.
Black
AC Black Diamond is the highest yielding black bean cultivar for the irrigated wide production in Southern Alberta. On average (31 station-years), the yield of AC Black Diamond was 2803 kg/ha and the maturity was 102 days from seeding. AC Black Diamond has an upright growth habit with large shiny seeds. Developed by AAFC Lethbridge Research Centre and distributed by Viterra Alberta Bean Division.
White Kidney
GTS 402 is a new white kidney bean with early maturity, but lower yield than GTS 401 in Manitoba wide-row trials. In two years of trials, it was nine to 11 days earlier maturing. n
