What is new in canola?

Top Crop Manager has assembled a list of new varieties and hybrids that are being introduced in commercial quantities for the 2012 growing season, including new clubroot- and sclerotinia-resistant varieties. We also review new canola breeding initiatives. The information is provided by the respective seed companies. Growers are encouraged to look at third-party trials, such as the Canola Council of Canada’s new Canola Performance Trials (see page 62), for further performance and agronomic information. Talk to local seed suppliers to see how new varieties also performed in local trials

Bayer CropScience
InVigor L120 is a LibertyLink hybrid that yielded 134 percent of checks 46A65 and Q2 in the 2009/2010 WCC/RRC co-op trials. It has an R (resistant) rating for blackleg. InVigor L120 is an early-maturing hybrid that is short to medium height and has excellent lodging resistance that is superior to the checks. It is available in limited quantities for 2012 from all retailers.

InVigor L135C is a LibertyLink hybrid that yielded 138 percent of checks 46A65 and Q2 in the 2010 WCC/RRC co-op trials. It has an R rating for blackleg and is resistant to clubroot.

InVigor L135C is an early-maturing hybrid that combines InVigor yields with clubroot resistance. It is a short to medium height hybrid that has excellent lodging resistance that is superior to the checks. It is available in limited quantities from all retailers in the areas of Alberta that have confirmed clubroot presence.



InVigor L170S is a LibertyLink hybrid that yielded 137 percent of checks 46A65 and Q2 in the 2010 WCC/RRC co-op trials. It has an R rating for blackleg and is tolerant to sclerotinia. InVigor L170S is a later-maturing hybrid that combines all the yield of an InVigor with sclerotinia tolerance. It is a tall hybrid that has excellent lodging resistance that is superior to the checks. It will be available late fall from all retailers in very limited quantities for 2012.

InVigor Experimental 8CN0024 is a LibertyLink hybrid that yielded 141 percent of checks 46A65 and Q2 in the 2010 WCC/RRC co-op trials. It has an R rating for blackleg. InVigor Experimental 8CN0024 is mid-maturing hybrid and has excellent lodging resistance that is superior to the checks. It will be available in late fall in limited quantities for 2012 exclusively from independent InterAg retailers.*

InVigor Experimental 8CN0096 is a LibertyLink hybrid that yielded 140 percent of checks 46A65 and Q2 in the 2010 WCC/RRC co-op trials. It has an R rating for blackleg. InVigor Experimental 8CN0096 is a mid-maturing hybrid suitable for all growing zones and has excellent lodging resistance that is superior to the checks. It will be available late fall in limited quantities for 2012 exclusively from Viterra retailers.*

BrettYoung Seeds
5535 CL is a new early maturing Clearfield Hybrid very well suited to production in the short- and mid-season areas. In co-op trials its strength in the short-season zone was evident with a yield of 148 percent of the checks. Overall in the 2008 and 2009 co-op trials 5535 CL yielded 127 percent of 46A65 and Q2. It is resistant to blackleg and has very good standability. Seed supply is good.

Canterra Seeds
CANTERRA 1990 is a Genuity Roundup Ready hybrid with a yield potential of 103 percent of 5440, the highest yielding in Canterra Seed’s lineup. It has an R rating for blackleg and Fusarium wilt. CANTERRA 1990 has excellent standability, and an early-season vigour that sees it jump out of the ground.

CANTERRA 1980 is a Genuity Roundup Ready hybrid with a yield potential of 103 percent of 45H29. It has an R rating for blackleg and Fusarium wilt. CANTERRA 1980 has an early maturity that makes it suited to all growing zones across the Prairies.

Cargill Specialty Oil Victory Hybrids
VICTORY V12-1 is the first of Cargill’s new “V-Class” series of higher performing VICTORY canola hybrids.  V12-1 is the highest-yielding Roundup Ready hybrid registered, and yielded 136 percent of co-op checks (46A65 and Q2) MSZ. It is rated R for blackleg resistance. V12-1 is part of the 2012 Cargill Specialty Canola Program. Seed is limited for 2012.

Dekalb
DEKALB 73-75 RR is Genuity Roundup Ready hybrid with a yield potential at 103 percent of 5440. It has an R rating for blackleg and Fusarium wilt. 73-75 RR is a very high-yielding 73 Series hybrid with a great all-around agronomic package, well adapted to all season zones.

DEKALB 73-15 RR is a Genuity Roundup Ready hybrid with a yield potential at 106 percent of DEKALB 73-35 RR. It has an MR rating for blackleg and R for Fusarium wilt. 73-15 RR provides a unique combination of high yield and early maturity. It makes a great fit for those in the short-season zone.

Monsanto has embarked on a $1.7-million facility upgrade at its Carman, Manitoba, research site. The site handles all fieldwork from the breeding program based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The investment will allow Monsanto to increase office space, purchase additional field equipment and expand the work areas for drying, threshing, packaging of the breeding and yield trial material at that site. 

The Carman expansion is Phase II of Monsanto’s breeding investment in Western Canada, and is required to properly and effectively manage the increased volume of material being generated at the new Winnipeg breeding centre.

Dow AgroSciences Nexera canola
Nexera 1012 RR is a new Roundup Ready hybrid with outstanding yield potential, very good lodging resistance for easier swathing, and $72 more in returns per acre than NX4-105 RR. Rated R for blackleg and Fusarium wilt. 

Nexera 1014RR is another Roundup Ready hybrid with outstanding yield potential, very good lodging resistance for easier swathing, and $67.20 more in returns per acre than NX4-105 RR. Rated R for blackleg and Fusarium wilt.

Nexera 2012 CL is a hybrid Clearfield-tolerant canola with outstanding yield potential, very good lodging resistance for easier swathing, and $33.60 more in returns per acre than NX4-205 CL.

Nexera 2014 CL is another new Clearfield hybrid with outstanding yield potential, very good lodging resistance for easier swathing, and $14.40 more in returns per acre than NX4-205 CL. Rated MR to blackleg and R to Fusarium wilt.

Nexera canola is grown under contract through Bunge, LDM Foods, Louis Dreyfus, Richardson Pioneer, Viterra, and selected Independent and Co-op Retails.

FP Genetics
94H04 is a Genuity Roundup Ready hybrid from the DL Seeds program. It has a yield potential of 123 percent of 46A65 and Q2. It has a strong R rating for blackleg and excellent lodging resistance. It is early maturing in short- to mid-season zones and offers excellent threshing for greater speed of harvesting. It is available at P&H locations, DynAgra, CPS locations, Horizon Fertilizer and some FP Genetics seed grower retail locations.
 
Mastin Seeds
ACS-C29 is a synthetic Polish type, conventional canola. On average, it yielded 13 percent more than the mean of AC Parkland and AC Sunbeam over two years of testing. ACS-C29 has fair resistance to lodging, similar to AC Parkland and AC Sunbeam. It has good resistance to white rust. Available from Mastin Seeds.

Pioneer Hi-Bred
45H31 is a Roundup Ready hybrid with yield potential of 129 percent of checks (46A65 and Q2).  It has an R rating for blackleg and Fusarium wilt. 45H31 has great standability and harvestability. Supply is good. Available exclusively from Pioneer Hi-Bred sales reps.

46S53 is a Roundup Ready hybrid with the Pioneer Protector Sclerotinia resistance trait built in. Offers exceptional yield potential at 122 percent of checks (46A65 and Q2). It has an R rating for blackleg and Fusarium wilt and an MR rating for sclerotinia. 46S53 offers an improved level of sclerotinia resistance, and standability of 45S51. Supply is limited. Available exclusively from Pioneer Hi-Bred sales reps.

46H75 is a Clearfield hybrid with a yield potential of 130 percent of checks (46A65 and Q2). It has an R rating for blackleg and Fusarium wilt. 46H75 has excellent early growth and outstanding standability. Supply is limited. Available exclusively from Pioneer Hi-Bred sales reps.

D3153 is a Roundup Ready hybrid with a yield potential of 127 percent of checks (46A65 and Q2). It has an R rating for blackleg and Fusarium wilt. D3153 has exceptional standability and harvestability. Supply is excellent. Available exclusively via DuPont at Federated Co-op and select Independent retailers. 

Earlier this year, Pioneer announced access to Bayer’s proprietary herbicide-tolerance technology, LibertyLink, for use in canola hybrids. Pioneer brand products with the LibertyLink trait will be available as soon as the trait is incorporated into Pioneer germplasm and the products are registered for sale.

Pioneer is also building a $15-million canola parent seed production facility near Wingham, Ontario. This production facility is a key component of significant investments Pioneer Hi-Bred is making in Canada. The plant will cover 35,000 square feet and will ship canola parent seed across Canada and the United States as well as to Australia and Chile. This facility will be fully operational in late 2012.

SeCan Association
Fusion is a Roundup Ready composite hybrid  with a yield potential of 123 percent of Q2 and 46A65. It has an R rating for blackleg and Fusarium wilt, and matures two days earlier than the checks. Fusion offers hybrid performance at an OP price. The variety will be grown by SeCan members, and processed and distributed locally.  

 AC Synergy is a synthetic conventional polish canola with a yield potential of 117 percent of the Polish checks AC Parkland and AC Sunbeam. It has a VG rating for white rust. Maturing two weeks earlier than most Argentine canola products AC Synergy will be an excellent risk-management tool for canola producers. 

Viterra
VT 500 G is a Roundup Ready hybrid with a yield potential of 107 percent of 45H21.
It has an R rating for blackleg and Fusarium wilt. VT 500 G is medium in maturity, suitable for all canola growing regions. VT 500 G has excellent lodging tolerance, making it easy to swath and allowing for many more acres per day.

Proven VR 9559 G is a Roundup Ready hybrid with excellent yield stability. It has an R rating for blackleg and Fusarium wilt. Proven VR 9559 G is medium in maturity, suitable to all canola-growing regions. Proven VR 9559 G has very good lodging tolerance.Yield data will be available fall 2011 from Viterra testing program.

VR 9560 CL is a Clearfield hybrid with a yield potential of 114 percent of 45H73. It has an R rating for blackleg and Fusarium wilt. VR 9560 CL is medium in maturity and suitable for all canola growing regions. VR 9560 CL has a very good lodging tolerance. Non-GMO premiums available in certain geographies for 2011-12.
