Record harvest in 2013

Dec. 4, 2013 - Statistics Canada released its November 2013 Production of Principal Field Crops, and it's no surprise that production of most field crops increased in 2013 compared with 2012 as yields reached a number of record highs.

Nationally, canola production increased 29.5 per cent from 2012 to a record 18 million tonnes. This was the result of a record average yield of 40 bushels per acre, up 42.3 per cent from 2012, which more than offset a nine per cent decline in harvested area.

Farmers reported record wheat production of 37.5 million tonnes, a 38.0 per cent increase from 2012. Both harvested area (+9.9 per cent) and average yield (+25.4 per cent) increased compared with 2012.

Overall, national soybean production rose 2.2 per cent to a record 5.2 million tonnes, despite a 5.6 per cent decline in average yield. Farmers reported an 8.7 per cent increase in corn for grain production to a record 14.2 million tonnes. This was the result of a record harvested area of 3.7 million acres.
