OMAFRA’s 2021 corn ear mould survey shows overall low DON levels

The annual Ontario corn ear mould and DON mycotoxin survey has been completed for 2021 by field crops specialists with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA), in partnership with Grain Farmers of Ontario (GFO) and members of the Ontario Agri-Business Association (OABA).

Corn ear moulds and their corresponding mycotoxins (including DON, or deoxynivalenol, also known as vomitoxin) are present each year in Ontario, and a deeper understanding of their levels in grain corn helps track disease levels and prevent feed disruptions and illness in livestock, especially hogs. According to the 2021 survey, 89 per cent of tested ears showed low levels of DON, which is in line with long-term survey averages. |READ MORE
