OMAFRA’s 2020 cereal season summary shows benefits of good planting conditions

The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) has released its 2020 cereals seasonal summary. Produced by the OMAFRA Field Crop Team, the summary discusses planting conditions, pest pressures, fertility, harvest and more.

The 2019 growing season had a slow start due to cold temperatures and high moisture levels. However, thanks to good conditions through September and October 2019, winter wheat was seeded in good time and was well-established before winter.

The 2020 cereals season started strong with higher than usual winter wheat survival. However, a cold snap in April and May caused concern among producers and resulted in some losses. Spring cereals were planted into excellent conditions – a welcome change from the previous year. |READ MORE
