OMAFRA: CTIS and soil compaction reduction strategies

October 7, 2021  By Top Crop Manager

Large, heavy farm machinery brings with it the risk of soil compaction. Two members of the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs’ (OMAFRA’s) Field Crop News team have looked at Central Tire Inflation Systems (CTIS) as a means of reducing compaction in a time- and cost-efficient manner.

Alex Barrie, soil management engineer, and Ian McDonald, crop innovations specialist, have previously discussed the merits of CTIS and described how it functions. It’s not possible to optimize tire pressure for both the road and the field, and trying to split the difference means a machine’s performance suffers in both situations. According to Barrie and McDonald, CTIS works by manipulating the contact patch of the tire on the ground by changing the pressure.

In their latest article, the two focus on providing examples of how CTIS reduces compaction, including photos and graphs to more clearly express the effects. |READ MORE
