A weed more common to warmer climates in the United States and a few places in southern Ontario and Quebec — giant ragweed — made an appearance in southwestern Manitoba in 2012. A few random metre-high plants showed up in research plots — a very unexpected sight. Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Development specialists encourage crop producers to be vigilant and monitor weed patches closely to reduce the risk of widespread problems. But, they say, weeds like giant ragweed and others are likely here to stay.
