In the last two years, three new cultivars have come out of the University of Alberta’s wheat breeding program, and more are on the way. The current program, led by Dr. Dean Spaner, may be small, but it’s developing some top-notch varieties. While early maturity is a major focus of Spaner’s breeding program, developing resistance to stripe, stem and leaf rust is also a special interest.
