Majority of Canadian farmers plan to expand operations

Now is the time to soil test

Saskatchewan provincial soil specialist, Ken Panchuk, says that now that we are into October, it is time to soil test if the task isn’t already completed. With soil temperatures cooling at this time of the year, microbial activity has slowed considerably and there will be little change in the soil analysis by waiting any longer. >> Read full article

Collaboration to improve wheat breeding efficiency

Over the next four years, the Canadian Wheat Alliance (CWA) and plant breeding companies, KWS and Syngenta Inc., will partner to develop high-quality wheat plants by improving existing doubled haploid technologies. Running on empty

Today, most soil test labs take N mineralization and immobilization into account when providing fertilizer recommendations. However, crops grown on summerfallow may be under-fertilized because of the depleted organic matter levels in the soils. Rigas Karamanos, of Koch Fertilizer Canada at Calgary, Alta., tested this theory by looking at research results found in the Westco database in a three-year trial in Saskatchewan and Alberta from 2003 to 2005. While the trials are 10 years old, Karamanos says the results are still valid today. He published the research in the Canadian Journal of Plant Science in November 2012. >> Learn More…
