This year, farmers and vendors can register for one of 350 Ontario Pesticide Education Program courses offered across the province. Over 5, 500 growers are expected to complete the Grower Pesticide Safety Course and about 300 Ontario vendors to take the Pesticide Vendor Certification Course. Courses are also being held to help Certified Farmers train their supervised workers.

The Canadian Agricultural Human Resource Council (CAHRC) is launching a comprehensive Labour Market Information (LMI) research survey to examine Canada’s agricultural workforce from every commodity and region across the country. More than 1,000 producers, farm workers and stakeholder organizations are being asked to take part in the survey, which runs through to January 22, 2015.

Soil is constantly changing, and during the last several decades, it is increasingly subjected to stressors, from the effects of climate change to newly implemented management practices. While soil description systems already exist, enhanced ways of tracking properties of the surface layer of the soil – also called topsoil, or on a more technical level, the soil A horizon – requires a methodology or framework that includes information not only on the various soil properties, but also the environmental and land use setting.
Dr. Catherine Fox, a soil scientist at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) in Harrow, Ont., along with other researchers at AAFC and in Germany have developed an enhanced A Horizon Framework to facilitate such detailed recording.
