New varieties from WinField

Sept. 12, 2013, Ontario –  Winfield Solutions is bringing two Croplan corn hybrid seed varieties with Agrisure Duracade to the Canadian market. Available for planting in the 2014 season, both the 2280AS5222 and 3080AS5222 varieties combine Syngenta's Agrisure Duracade with Croplan seed by WinField, in an effort to control corn rootworm, according to a press release.

Both the 2280AS5222 and 3080AS5222 varieties are tested extensively at Answer Plot locations, according to Colin Smith, a seed agronomy advisor at WinField. Smith says data is drawn from nearly 200 Answer Plot locations, nine of which are in Canada, to determine which seed and crop inputs perform best in various soil types and growing conditions.

Croplan 2280AS5222 has a Crop Heat Unit (CHU) rating of 2525. The product is early flowering and has northern movement and yield potential in environments with favorable moisture, according to a WinField press release. The company claims ears are consistent and girthy with some flex.

The 3080AS5222 variety has a 2800 CHU rating, giving it the flexibility needed for strong grain yields and quality silage in somewhat warmer growing conditions. Again with a large, consistent and girthy ear, WinField says this variety performs best at medium to high populations with a fungicide application.
