New DNA-based test for tall waterhemp

July 3, 2024  By Top Crop Manager

20/20 Seed Labs Inc. introduced a new DNA-based test for tall waterhemp (Amaranthus tuberculatus), which complements their existing Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri) test. Now both weeds are indicated in the test for easier identification from other Amaranthus species in Canada, such as redroot pigweed. This provides Canadian farmers with valuable information to protect their yield from weeds.

“DNA testing is already recommended to check for Palmer amaranth’s presence if pigweed or Amaranth species are found in phytosanitary checks of import/export crops. We are pleased to extend our capability to include tall amaranth for in and out of field season testing,” says Sarah Foster, president and senior analyst at 20/20 Seed Labs Inc. “Reliable identification of both weeds is so important in limiting spread.”

Testing for tall waterhemp began July 2. For more information, visit 2020seedlabs.ca.
