Nov. 3, 2015 - This year Saskatchewan experienced an early, warm spring compared to the previous three growing seasons. Dry conditions were less favourable to crop growth with some areas not receiving significant rainfall until well into July.
According to Scott Hartley, Saskatchewan Agriculture's provincial specialist, insect/vertebrate pest management, with the higher temperatures, flea beetles and cutworms were reported in seedling crops in May. As well, grasshoppers and wheat midge required control measures in some areas of the province later in June and July respectively. However, the most frequent insect pest reported in July and early August were aphids in most crops.
