OTTAWA, ON -Producers are reminded that important deadlines are fast approaching to sign up for farm financial programs:
* The deadline to apply for the $600 million to kickstart AgriInvest accounts is April 14.
* The deadline to enroll in 2008 AgriStability is April 30.
AgriInvest and AgriStability are the first programs to roll out under Growing Forward, a vision for Canada's agriculture, agri-food and agri-based products industry. AgriInvest producer accounts help cover small margin declines. The federal government is providing $600 million to kickstart the new accounts. AgriStability helps cover larger margin declines.
The majority of producers do not need to apply for AgriInvest Kickstart and have already received a letter explaining their benefit. Producers who have not received a letter need to apply by the April 14, 2008 deadline. Producers do not have to open a bank account or make a deposit to be eligible for the AgriInvest Kickstart funds. Further information on when and how accounts will be opened for AgriInvest will be provided to producers through direct mail later this year. In Quebec, AgriInvest accounts are held by La Financi re agricole du Québec.
Producers who participated in 2007 AgriStability will automatically receive an Enrolment Notice for 2008 AgriStability. Those who did not participate in 2007 or are new to farming are encouraged to call their administration for more information.
Producers also have to respond to their 2008 AgriStability Enrolment Notice and submit their 2008 AgriStability fee by April 30, 2008, or within 30 days of the date on their Notice. Fees paid after this date will be accepted until December 31, 2008, but a late fee penalty will be applied.
