Bigger, better crops in 2008
The good news continues for Western agriculture, and for Saskatchewan farmers in particular, as reports indicate an above-average crop for 2008, both in yield and quality, says Saskatchewan Agriculture.

Farmers harvested an above-average crop this year in terms of both yield and quality, Saskatchewan Agriculture said in its final crop report of 2008.
"We're looking at an above-average crop this year in comparison to last year,'' said Dan Schmeiser, manager of economic and commodity analysis for Saskatchewan Agriculture.
Last year, farmers brought in a crop of below 24 million tonnes, which was slightly below the 10-year average of 24 million to 25 million tonnes.
"This year … we're quite comfortable with the Statistics Canada forecast, which came out at the beginning of October, where they were forecasting a crop of slightly less than 28 million tonnes."
Schmeiser said the above-average crop is "good news'' for farmers, considering that crop development was behind due to the cool weather in spring.
"I think we can count ourselves fortunate in respect of the fact that frost did not occur in the latter part of August or early September. So we had the opportunity for those late crops to mature."
