August storms impact Manitoba

September 9, 2013
By Top Crop Manager

Sept. 9, 2013 - August storms affected large areas of Manitoba over the past few weeks, primarily along the eastern border and throughout the south. Hail claim numbers were relatively light throughout July, but are now on par with the five-year average following major activity from August 18 and August 31 storms.

The August 31 storm cell dropped large hail that resulted in damage ranging from 20 per cent to 100 per cent. Swathed canola appears to have been the crop most affected in that storm.

Significant August dates/areas included:
August 18: A line from Belmont and Baldur to Pilot Mound and La Riviere, and areas
around Beausejour, Lac du Bonnet and Pinawa.
August 31: An area from Pierson in the west to Dufrost in the east, including Pilot Mound, Crystal City, Horndean, Rosenfeld, St. Jean, Morris, Letellier, Emerson, Treherne, Holland, Rathwell and St. Claude, as well as areas around Glendora, Notre Dame, Morden, Winkler, Arborg, La Riviere, Mariapolis and Swan Lake.

Alberta hail claims remain above average for 2013
A wild start to the storm season in Alberta hit the southern part of the province hard very early in the season. Several large storms impacted central Alberta from mid to late July. August saw more normal claim volumes, but overall claim activity remains at approximately 25 per cent above average for 2013.

Saskatchewan claim numbers below average for the season
Saskatchewan hail claims remain slightly below the five-year average, with limited hail storm activity in the first weeks of August. The last week of August saw increased activity, and a storm on the 28th impacted a large area of the province, starting in the southwest and moving through to the northeast. That storm resulted in the highest number of claims, but overall damage appears to have been light to moderate.

Significant August dates/areas included:
August 23: Assiniboia, Mossbank, Eston and Foam Lake.
August 24: Areas around Foam Lake and Invermay.
August 28: Eastend, Swift Current, Cabri, Shamrock, Coderre, Central Butte, Tugaske, Chamberlain, Stalwart, Imperial, Liberty, Nokomis, Drake, Jansen, Kelvington, Southey and Cupar.
August 30: Luseland Macklin, Nipawin, Carrot River, Moose Range, Codette and Gainsborough.
