2015 declared International Year of Soils by UN

Jan. 5, 2015 - 2015 has been declared by the UN General Assembly as International Year of Soils.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN says the aim is to increase awareness and understanding of the importance of soil for food security and essential ecosystem functions.

The official launch took place during UN World Soil Day 2014 on December 5th.

Specific goals include educating the public about the role soil plays in food security, as well as in climate change adaptation.
