Farmers looking forward to future

Jan. 19, 2010 -More than half of Canada's producers are optimistic about agriculture's future, according to a survey by Farm Credit Canada. Fifty-five percent of 4500 respondents questioned last fall said they were optimistic about the future; that is up one percent compared to 2008.  READ MORE

Jan. 19, 2010 -In a recent cabinet shuffle, Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty, has moved Huron-Bruce member Carol Mitchell to the agriculture portfolio, replacing Leona Dombrowsky.        READ MORE



Canadian farmers unite to call for investment

Jan. 18, 2010 -A coalition made up of four different grower organizations from across Canada is calling for the federal government to invest more in agronomic research. The group, Farmers for Investment in Agriculture, is asking the government to reverse a 40 percent drop in funding for agronomic research that has occurred since 1994.          READ MORE



Brazilian soybean production increasing

Jan. 14, 2010 -According to the USDA, soybean production in Brazil is forecast to reach a record of 65 million tonnes, an increase of two million tonnes this month compared to December, and eight million tonnes compared to the previous year.   READ MORE



Canola farmers gain improved market access

Jan. 11, 2010 -Canola farmers can now expect better market access and potentially high profitability, thanks to a $7.8 million investment from the Canadian government, plus $1.2 million from the Canola Council of Canada.     READ MORE



Potatoes in PEI rotting in storage

Jan. 11, 2010 -Some potato growers on Prince Edward Island are losing large portions of their potato crop to rot in storage, following a wet October, yet the province's agriculture minister George Webster told CBC News last week that he does not consider it serious enough to warrant government compensation.        READ MORE

Jan. 12, 2010 -Canada's reputation as an exporter of high quality flax is under attack both near and far, and Barry Hall, president of Flax Council of Canada calls the opposition "unfounded," stating there is no safety issue to halt or disrupt shipments abroad.    READ MORE



Farmers shatter corn production records

Jan. 12, 2010 -The final report from the US Department of Agriculture is out and the 2009 corn crop in the US is a record, in spite of poor planting conditions and a less than favourable growing season.  And it was achieved on fewer acres, as well.        READ MORE



US farm leader issues stern warning

Jan. 11, 2010 -American Farm Bureau Federation president Bob Stallman recently issued a warning to critics of agriculture, citing terms like "monoculture," and "factory farmer," imploring farmers to deny critics in their efforts to divide the farming community.      READ MORE



Social media actually helps farming

Jan. 7, 2010 -As a response to "Farmville," the increasingly popular Facebook application, the Animal Agriculture Alliance in the US has released a video, "The Real Farmville," which helps viewers grasp the actual role of farm producers and ranchers, and the challenges they face in doing the job they do.        READ MORE
