Bank of Canada Leaves Rate Unchanged

The Bank of Canada is maintaining its key target rate at 3 percent, citing the weakening US economy, turbulence on a global basis and continuing price hikes for commodities. The latter of the three conditions is causing increases in Canadian trade and national income.



Regulations urged to rein in speculators

High fuel prices are hitting everyone hard, including growers and consumers.  Now American corporate CEOs and leaders of at least one US-based commodity group are lending their voice to calls to regulate fuel and energy speculators.

Corn markets beginning to ration supply
The latest numbers from the USDA indicate the losses from heavy rains in the US Midwest actually may be overcome by early planting in parts of the Western corn belt.  Current acreage estimates for corn and soybeans are remarkably close to those initially set in March.

China allocates budget to boost pork production
In news that is certain to be of interest to the Canadian hog and pork industries, China is redirecting more of its national budget to increasing the size of its hog production sector.  Some of the money will go to help farmers affected by heavy snows and earthquakes earlier this year.

US sales of distillers grains to China continue

The United States Grains Council continues to find buyers of dry distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) in China, following the purchase of 150 tonnes by three different interests.



Ontario corn growers question premier
The Ontario Corn Producers' Association has released a statement, questioning Ontario premier Dalton McGuinty's statement about reassessing the province's position on a 10 percent ethanol blend in Ontario by 2010.

Statistics Canada releases May figures for trade

The latest trade numbers for May 2008 from Statistics Canada show a rising surplus of $5.5 billion or $700 million higher than in April 2008.  Agricultural and fishing products exports and imports posted gains of 2.6 percent and 3.4 percent, repsectively.



Judge orders USDA to allow comment on Canadian beef imports
By order of a federal court judge, the United States Department of Agriculture must allow comment on Canadian beef imports, addressing parts of a lawsuit recently filed by R-CALF USA. The ruling does not affect current trade of Canadian live cattle or beef.
