New directory connect communities with cooperatives
A new online database allows people to search for cooperatives based on location, product or service. There are 1300 cooperatives, credit unions and caisses populaires in Ontario which provide services in agriculture, child care, finances, and housing. The e-directory is the first ever effort to assemble co-op information in one place.

Domestic demand may be the driver of hog price run-up
Over the past two weeks, hog prices have increased by nearly 20 percent, surpassing the normal seasonal price climb. Analysts suspect this increase is the result of domestic demand as there has been no shortage of supply. Slaughter rates are up 14 percent from this time last year.

Grain supply situation the result of more than just ethanol
Ethanol production is quickly falling out of favour with the rising food crises as if it were the only source of the turnaround in the grain supply situation. However, the argument is not so simple. The alternative to ethanol production, increased reliance on oil, is not a very palatable option.

Carbon storage in no-till varies with soil type, depth
Researchers at Ohio State University have shown the type and depth of soil plays a role in the extent that no til production can help store carbon in plants and in the soil.  In particular, the focus is on the deeper layers of the soil profile below the plow layer.

Keeping Risk Management a Priority
High commodity prices put the Risk Management Program at risk despite farmers' initial struggle to get it implemented. Producers may not see the value in paying the premium for the program with the current prices. However, it is important to look beyond the current boom period.

Farm Product Price Index
According to numbers from Statistics Canada, commodity prices rose 8.7 per cent from last February but livestock and animal products prices have decreased for the sixth consecutive year.

USDA confirms Asian soybean rust has new host plant
Last week, the United States Deparment of Agriculture confirmed that a new host plant has been found for Asian soybean rust.  Coral bean or cherokee bean has been determined to sustain rust spores.  At present, the Asian soybean rust has been found in six counties in Florida and one in Texas.

Food safety initiative has retailers lining up
Nearly 40 retailers in the US have pledged to join a new initiative program, entitled 'Be Food Safe, during the next year.  The report comes from the Food Marketing Institute.

US FDA withdraws StarLink testing guidance
The United States Grains Council recently announced its Food and Drug Administration has withdrawn its voluntary guidance to corn dry millers and masa flour manufacturers for the testing of the presence of the Cry9C protein found in StarLink corn hybrids.

Canada asks for access to South Korea in step with US
No sooner did the US beef sector regain access to the South Korean market than Canadian interests began asking for the same access, and an end to a ban that dates back nearly five years.
