Government of Canada improves support to farmers
Under proposed amendments to the Agricultural Marketing Products Act, (AMPA), the Government of Canada is resolving to deliver 'real help' to struggling farm families, as they adjust to new market realities.

Japanese buyers choose US feed barley
In a report of interest to Western Canadian barley growers, Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries recently purchased the largest market share of feed barley from the US in its first 2008 Simultaneous Buy and Sell (SBS) program, specifically for feed barley.

Farm cash receipts hit record

Surging grain prices led to record high market cash receipts for Canadian producers in 2007, with dairy, poultry and egg producers seeing higher revenues, as well, according to numbers from Statistics Canada.



Welcome aid for livestock producers
Word that federal relief funds are being made available to struggling cattle and hog producers across Canada is being met with praise by members of the Canadian Federation of Agriculture (CFA).

Mexico and Barbados open to Canadian breeding cattle

The Government of Mexico has announced it will allow the import of breeding cattle from Canada, along with the current access for beef and beef products.  The breeding cattle ban also has been lifted by Barbados.



Farm equipment exports up 13 percent in 2007

Exports of US-manufactured farm machinery increased to $8.2 billion in 2007, advancing more than 13 percent, including a six percent hike in sales to Canada, according to the US Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM).



USDA issues new 2008 planted acreage estimates
Estimates for planted acres of the top eight crops in the US are forecast to increase by 6.8 million acres to 252.3 million in 2008, including an increase in corn and soybean crops totalling 7.0 million acres, according to figures from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Livestock numbers on the decline
According to numbers from Statistics Canada, figures from 2007 indicate Canada's cattle herd and hog inventories were on the decline, as a result of continuing border issues with BSE in cattle and higher feed prices and a high Canadian dollar in hogs.

Research centre kicks off Year of Potato

To celebrate the International Year of the Potato, the Government of Canada, through Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's Potato Research Centre (PRC) in Fredericton, New Brunswick, is offering 15 new varieties for further testing.



Farmers urge government to invest in agriculture
With a federal budget to be presented on Tuesday, February 26th, the Canadian Federation of Agriculture (CFA) is calling on the federal government to invest in agriculture, citing good business practices and the need for prudent spending.
